UK MOT Check: Car TAX history in 1 click
Owning a car in the UK comes with various rules and regulations. Along with tax and insurance, vehicles over three years old must undergo an annual MOT test. Short for Ministry of Transport, the MOT ensures your car meets safety and environmental standards. Our MOT check online service will show you the full car TAX history.
How does our MOT History Check tool work?
Our MOT History Check tool relies on our comprehensive MOT database to offer an exhaustive and highly detailed list of characteristics packed into a single webpage for your convenience.
Here’s everything you can learn about your vehicle by using it.

Vehicle information
MOTchecker provides you with a list of 15 vehicle parameters: from basic information (make, model, fuel type, etc.) to highly specific nuances (date of registration, insurance group, cylinder capacity, V5C issue date, and more).

MOT
The MOT section shows key data regarding your vehicle’s MOT, allowing you to check MOT status, due date, and previous records, providing all necessary information in a convenient way.

Tax
The car tax check section of the report showcases the road tax status and due date as well as CO2 emission levels and calculated tax costs, enabling you to plan your budget accordingly.

Mileage information
This section collects all the necessary data to provide you with an estimated vehicle mileage, average yearly mileage, and the last record, if available.

MOT History
The MOT test history section showcases every single MOT check the vehicle went through, showing which ones were successful and which ones failed, highlighting the reasons behind these failures. This car history report provides you with a clear picture of what the vehicle has been through and enables you to make informed decisions based on that data.
Why is it important to check your MOT?
MOT defines whether you are allowed to drive a certain vehicle or not, making it one of the most important legal requirements for any car owner. Any person who drives a vehicle without a valid MOT can be fined up to £1,000.
However, it gets worse — if you drive a vehicle that has failed an MOT because of a “dangerous” problem, not only will you get fined up to £2,500, but you can also be banned from driving entirely and get 3 penalty points.
Missing MOT check deadlines is severely penalised, which makes using a MOT expiry reminder highly important.
How reliable is our MOT data?
MOTchecker gathers all MOT-related data from multiple official sources, including GOV.UK Vehicle Tax, MOT History, and MOT Status. Our team also relies on several paid third-party providers to offer the most comprehensive and convenient database available in the UK.
How to register for the MOT test?
In general, the MOT test is required for any vehicle on the third anniversary of its registration or the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over three years old. However, some vehicles (like ambulances and taxis) need to be checked every year.
To register for the annual MOT test you need to contact an approved MOT test centre. You can recognise it by the signature blue sign with three white triangles. After that, you’re supposed to deliver the vehicle to the centre. If you cannot do that, some centres can collect it and then return it after the testing is finished. Alternatively, you can ask someone else to drive the vehicle to the centre as long as they are insured to do it.
MOT testing has a maximum fee limit, meaning that accredited MOT centres aren’t allowed to charge higher than the law requires. The test itself consists of several stages that ensure that your car meets the legal standards. If you wish, you are allowed to observe the vehicle inspection process from a specialised viewing area.
There are two possible outcomes of the test: your vehicle can either pass it or fail. If the tester finds that your car has some “dangerous” problems, it will be reflected in the vehicle technical report and the MOT database. As a result, you won’t be allowed to drive it.
Cars with “major” problems can still meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness and be allowed to be used as long as your current MOT is valid — although you will still have to fix the issues if you want to renew it. You can also appeal the result of testing if you believe that it is wrong.
Why do people trust MOTchecker when it comes to MOT?

Hi, I’m Clinton Brewill, CEO of MOTchecker with a legal education and over 15 years of expertise in the automotive industry. The reason I started MOTchecker is simple — I got tired of seeing so many UK citizens struggling with getting proper MOT information, which often resulted in people getting fined by the government or scammed by vehicle sellers.
I believe that this wouldn’t be the case if every vehicle owner had access to all of the information they need to make informed decisions. That is why our team ensured that MOTchecker provides as much relevant and verified data as possible while still being user-friendly and accessible.
We also believe that no matter what we say, nothing will be as convincing as using the tool we created — so try it out and experience its effectiveness firsthand.
FAQ
How often do you update data?
We regularly sync our data with both official and third-party services. Any data you receive from us is 100% up-to-date.
What if my car has no MOT history?
The most likely reason for that is that you have a vehicle that is either less than three years old, not registered in the UK, or never tested. In that case, MOTchecker will provide any publicly available data on the vehicle.
Is MOTchecker safe to use?
All of your searches are completely anonymous. We don’t share your data and only provide results based on the registration number you enter.
Do you provide accurate mileage info?
We provide mileage data recorded during previous MOT tests as well as other available records. However, when it comes to MOT mileage check, we have to rely on publicly available information. In some cases, there might be gaps or inconsistencies, so you have to keep that in mind.
Can I check my motorcycle?
Yes, MOTchecker enables you to check any type of vehicle — just enter your registration plate and we will provide you with all the relevant information.
